Angola Industrial Silicon Project – EPC Supply (2 × 16,500 kVA Furnaces)

I. Product:
 Industrial Silicon (metallurgical-grade silicon)

II. Capacity: 16,500 kVA per furnace

III. Furnace Type: Semi-closed submerged arc furnace

IV. Quantity: 2 furnaces

V. Construction Time: 2023

VI. Project Location: Republic of Angola (southwest Africa)

VII. Project Details:

In 2023, Hongxin signed a contract with APU (Jiangshan) Electric Furnace Industrial Engineering Co., Ltd. for the supply of two 16,500 kVA semi-closed submerged arc furnaces for industrial silicon production. The end-user project is located in Angola, marking Hongxin’s entry into the African metallurgical market and demonstrating our ability to deliver reliable furnace solutions to emerging industrial regions.

Background and Client Relationship:
APU (Jiangshan) Electric Furnace Industrial Engineering Co., Ltd. is a specialized engineering firm focused on electric furnace projects, often serving as an intermediary or turnkey contractor for overseas clients. By selecting Hongxin as the furnace equipment supplier, APU leveraged our proven track record in industrial silicon furnace design and manufacturing. This collaboration allowed APU to offer a complete solution to their Angolan end-user, combining civil works and local installation with Hongxin’s core furnace technology.

Scope of Supply:
Hongxin’s scope covered the engineering design, manufacturing, and supply of the complete submerged arc furnace system for two units. Each furnace has a capacity of 16,500 kVA and features a semi-closed design – an optimal choice for industrial silicon production in regions where moderate environmental controls and operational simplicity are prioritized. The scope included the furnace main body, electrode columns (including Söderberg or pre-baked electrode systems as specified), bus tubes, water cooling systems, charging equipment (top silo and feed chutes), electrical control panels, transformers, and all necessary auxiliary equipment for stable operation. Additionally, Hongxin provided technical documentation, installation supervision, and commissioning guidance to ensure successful start-up on site.

Logistics and Execution:
Executing a project in Angola posed unique challenges, including long-distance sea freight, customs clearance in Luanda or other ports, and inland transportation to the final site. Hongxin coordinated closely with APU to ensure that all heavy equipment – transformers, furnace shells, electrode columns, and electrical cabinets – were properly packed, shipped, and delivered on schedule. Despite the complexities of African logistics, all equipment arrived in good condition and within the planned 2023 construction window.

Current Status and Outlook:
As of the latest update, the two furnaces have been delivered to the site. Depending on the progress of civil works and local installation (which were handled by APU or the end-user), the furnaces are either ready for mechanical completion or in the final stages of assembly. Once commissioned, each 16,500 kVA semi-closed furnace is expected to produce industrial silicon at competitive operating costs, supporting Angola’s nascent industrial base and reducing reliance on imported metallurgical materials. The client has expressed satisfaction with Hongxin’s responsiveness and equipment quality. This Angola project serves as a valuable reference for future African projects, demonstrating Hongxin’s capability to deliver reliable furnace solutions across continents.
